| Position Description: | Under the general direction of the Director/Assistant Director of Maintenance, plans, directs, and oversees the maintenance of all County grounds. Utilizing vast knowledge of horticulture and lawn/excavating equipment, supervises a wide range of tasks associated with grounds maintenance. Supervises ground maintenance crew and coordinates work for seasonal employees and jail crew. Supervises maintenance and repair of ground equipment which includes troubleshooting and hands-on servicing of tractors, backhoe, riding lawnmowers, chainsaws, and various heavy equipment and other vehicles. Coordinates, supervises and performs a variety of building maintenance projects such as pulling phone/electrical cable, painting, relocation of offices, and plumbing and other tasks at park's facilities as necessary. |
| Minimum Requirements: | High school diploma or equivalent with a professional level of knowledge and training equivalent to that which would be attained by completing a regular two year college program in horticulture, turf management, or related field is required. Must possess a valid Michigan CDL Driver's License with a Class "A" group designation and have a good driving record. At least three years responsible ground maintenance experience is required. Additional qualifications that are also necessary for this position include: 1) knowledge of ground maintenance equipment, safety, OSHA, personnel management, horticulture, and fiscal control. 2) excellent written and oral language skills. 3) ability to purchase supplies and monitor contracts. 4) ability to negotiate and communicate with people effectively and occasionally deal with irate and/or disturbed people. 5) ability to use tact and diplomacy and understand people from all socio/economic and cultural backgrounds. 6) ability to perform long periods of physical work.
Applicant must also demonstrate the capacity to use logic, exercise sound judgment, manage and schedule time, and make sound decisions. Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of grounds maintenance and/or other maintenance equipment. |
