
Charles
L. Brown, Saginaw County Sheriff, has held the
position of Sheriff since December 1, 1998 and was elected November
7, 2000 to a
four-year term and again in 2004 to a four-year term. Currently,
he commands 135 sworn and civilian employees and over 85
support unit members of the Saginaw County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Brown has spent over 39 years in law enforcement, serving
in Saginaw County for the past 28 years.
He
began his law enforcement career with the Michigan State Police
in 1969, assigned as a State Trooper at the Lapeer State Police
Post. During his career with the Michigan State Police, he was
assigned to the Training Division and was involved in recruiting.
He also held positions as an Investigator, Supervisor, and Administrator
during his tour with the Michigan State Police.
In 1998,
Sheriff Brown became the first Criminal Investigator to be hired
by the Saginaw Prosecutor's Office. Along with several other duties set forth
by the Prosecutor's Office, Sheriff Brown coordinated the establishment of the
Investigative Subpoena Process which resulted in the arrest and conviction
of several homicide suspects. He has been involved in several major criminal
investigations in the Saginaw County area and throughout the state.
Sheriff
Brown attended Northern Michigan University, majoring in Secondary
Education, and is a 1974 graduate of the National Crime Prevention
Academy at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. He is a 1999
graduate of the National Sheriff Institute in Longmont, Colorado.
During
his career, he received awards for Officer of the Year, Marquette
County; State Police Trooper of the Year 1991; Saginaw County
Exchange Club Officer of the Year 1986 and 1990, as well as the
Saginaw Valley Crime Stopper Award in 1993. Interpol has recognized
Sheriff Brown for investigative excellence.
Sheriff
Brown is a member of several community and law enforcement organizations
in Saginaw County and serves on several boards. He is a member for the
Saginaw County Chiefs of Police Association, Deputy Sheriffs Association, Chairman of the Delta College
Law Enforcement Consortium, Chair of the Law Enforcement and Corrections
Training for Delta College, Board member of the CAN Council, 6 year member of
Saginaw County Red Cross Board, 6 year member of the Salvation Army Board, member
Saginaw Exchange Club, charter member of the Frankenmuth Optimist Club,
Saginaw Fordney Club and Downtown Saginaw Association. Sheriff Brown was appointed
by the Governor to the Community Corrections Authority Board
from 2004 to 2011. He is also a member of the National Sheriff
Association, Michigan Chiefs of Police Association, and the Michigan
Sheriff Association. Michigan Chiefs of Police Association, and the Michigan
Sheriff Association. Since 2004, he has been the MSA District 5 Representative
and currently serves as the State Vice President for the Michigan Sheriffs' Association.
His
wife of 39 years, Mary, is a retired teacher. They have two children.
Daughter Melissa is married and a full time mother of two. Son
Brent is married, has one child and is employed with the State Department as a
federal agent in the Diplomatic Protection and Investigative
Unit.
