Humana’s continued priority is the health and well-being of you and your employees. You recently received an email outlining the initial steps Humana has taken in response to the spread of COVID- 19. These actions were designed to assist retirees by removing potential barriers to care and support our clients by providing coverage flexibility.
New steps to support our clients and members
Given the evolving dynamics of this unprecedented health crisis, Humana has announced significant, new steps being taken to care for members, employers, and communities. These steps include:
Waived cost-sharing for COVID-19 treatment: Humana previously announced that it would cover out-of-pocket costs related to coronavirus testing. Now, co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance related to subsequent treatment for COVID-19 — including inpatient hospital admissions — will be waived for members. The waiver applies to all medical services related to the treatment of COVID-19 as well as FDA-approved medications or vaccines when they become available. There is no current end date. Humana will reassess as circumstances change. These actions will help to ensure that no member will have to worry about treatment costs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We will cover the member responsibility for copays, deductibles or coinsurance for COVID-19-related services for in-network or out-of-network covered benefits during this time of crisis, and we will continue to reimburse providers as we do today, consistent with existing contractual arrangements and according to plan benefits, in compliance with state and federal rules. For members using out-of-network providers, Humana will work to protect them from balance bills by direct negotiation with these providers. Humana is also working to advocate for federal and state policies that would provide further protection for our members from unexpected out-of-network-related provider costs specific to COVID-19 treatment.
Ensuring access to care for those who need it most: One of the most critical, immediate ways we can support healthcare providers during this health emergency is to maximize their time and capacity to offer care to patients most in need. Therefore, Humana will lift administrative requirements for members infected with coronavirus and for all patients in settings where capacity is stretched by the needs of those infected by coronavirus. The change allows for unencumbered movement from inpatient hospitals to safe, medically appropriate post-acute care settings, including home health, long-term acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, etc. We will continue to evaluate additional measures needed to eliminate administrative burdens across a broader spectrum of care.
